B&L: How did you get started?
Rebecca: After completing school I worked in fashion agency for 5 years. At the same time I also designed and produced a small collection with my best friend for young woman that were more voluptuous and not sized 8-14.
In 1998 I moved from Melbourne to Sydney and designed for a company that worked with production overseas and in 2000 I decided the time was right to create the Rebecca Thompson label.
B&L: Have you always had a love for fashion?
Rebecca: Always! I remember the day I decided that I was going to become a fashion designer.
I was 5 years old and bored in church!

B&L: How would you describe your range?
Rebecca: Beautiful, romantic and unique.
Lots of pure fabric choices i.e. silk georgettes and chiffons. Often hand crafted & embellished with hand embroidery and hand beading, making each piece an artwork.
B&L: What was the first thing you ever designed?
Rebecca: A Gothic wedding dress for a company in New Zealand. Long “Morticia” bell sleeves, corseted front & back and lots of cobweb lace.
B&L: Which celebrity would you most like to dress?
Rebecca: Kate Blanchett, Rachael Zoe (stylist to the stars), Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, The list is endless……
B&L: Where do you get your inspiration?
Rebecca: Luckily I’m surrounded by artisans in India, who come to me and show me their beautiful beading and embroidery work which makes creating a collection very inspiring.
B&L: What makes your brand unique?
Rebecca: The hand crafted side of the garment makes the label unique and different to the other designer’s collections. Sometimes a dress takes up to 24 hours to bead.
B&L: What are you wearing this season?
Rebecca: I’m wearing my latest collection Winter 2007.
Silk Georgette dresses (a simple clothing choice every morning ‘the dress’ no fuss) featuring pintucking and lace detailing in beautiful colours like soft grey and mineral red and of course black!
B&L: Where can we buy your collection?
Rebecca: The Rebecca Thompson label is stocked throughout Australia in over 40 boutiques. With plans to take the label to the USA and UK by the end of the year.
A list of Rebecca Thompson stockists can be found on the website under stockists at

B&L: What does being a woman mean to you?
Rebecca: Well I don’t know any different obviously but I love the idea of being able or allowed to dress up every day using hair, make up and garments to create different looks. Some days dressing more pretty and romantic and other days more edgy.
